Procedure for Weighting Student Marks

In accordance with the stipulations of Annex I of the Royal Decree 1267/94, the following procedures shall be used for weighting marks awarded to students following the University of Barcelona’s Official New Plan of Studies adapting credits to the European Higher Education Area’s ECTS credits system:

a) Students having completed all their graduate studies according to the New Plan

The mark will be calculated using the following formula:

S CjQj
---------- = Q*P
S Cj

In the formula above, Cj refers to the number of credits (C) carried by subject (j) and Qj refers to the mark awarded, expressed by the descriptors in the following table:

Aprovat (a pass) - 1

Notable (a distinction) - 2

Excel.lent (excellent) - 3

M. Honor (honours) - 4

Convalidada (officially validated) - 1

The formula for weighting student marks can be understood as follows:

  • The total number of credits available for each successfully completed subject will be multiplied by the subject’s final mark and a sum total of the obtained quantities will be made.
  • The sum total obtained above will be divided by the total number of credits that the student has successfully completed.

b) Students having completed part of their graduate studies according to the University of Barcelona’s Old Plan of Studies and having adapted to the New Plan

The formula for these students will be the same as for students described above in (a), including both the subjects studied according to the Old Plan (the marks for which will be carried forwards) and those studied according to the New Plan. Beforehand, and only for the purposes of applying the formula, the equivalent value of the credits carried by subjects in the Old Plan will be determined following these guidelines:

  • In those cases in the Old Plan of Studies where the total number of class hours carried by each subject is specified in the Official State Bulletin, this total will converted into credits following the principle that for every 10 hours of class the student is awarded 1 credit. If, instead, the Official State Bulletin specifies the total number of class hours by week, this total will be multiplied either by 30, in the case of subjects completed during the course of the academic year, or by 15, in the case of subjects completed during one semester, so as to obtain the total number of subject hours and convert these into credits.
  • In those cases in the old plan of studies where the total number of class hours carried by each subject has not been specified in the Official State Bulletin, the Dean of Faculty or personnel in charge of such matters in the corresponding centre should officially inform the Academic Commission of the University of Barcelona’s Governing Board of the number of real class hours for each subject the student has studied, so that the conversion into credits may be made.

The credits adapted and included in the New Plan will not be considered when wighting the student’s mark, given that the subjects carrying these credits will have already been evaluated in the Old Plan and will form part of the student’s academic record and qualification.

For the purposes of weighting student marks, in both (a) and (b) as described above, the UB will not consider either those credits obtained by the student over and above the registration limits stipulated by the University’s Governing Board (JG Agreements 21/05/93 and 21/12/94) or free-choice credits.

Additional criteria to the criteria approved by the University’s Governing Board Agreement JG 23/02/96 to be applied to the calculation of the mark determined in the student’s academic record

a) Weighting marks for students having completed their graduate studies according to the Old Plan:

The mark awarded will be the sum total of marks available for successfully completed subjects divided by the total number of successfully completed subjects.

The mark will be expressed by one of the following descriptors: Aprovat (a pass): 1; Notable (a distinction): 2; Excel·lent (excellent): 3; Matrícula d’Honor (honours): 4; Convalidada (officially validated): 1.

"Voluntary" subjects and subjects without a component of academic study will not be counted.

For subjects coursed 4-monthly or by semester, the calculation will be made using half the mark in the sum total and half the subject in the divisor.

b) Weighting marks for students having transferred from other universities (following the Old Plan of Studies in the university of origin and the New Plan at the UB)

The formula for these students will be the same as for those students having completed all their studies at the University of Barcelona and having transferred from the Old Plan to the New Plan. The weighting will include both those successfully completed subjects in the Old Plan, the marks and class hours of which will be carried forwards, and those successfully completed subjects in the UB’s New Plan.

For weighting these students’ marks, the sum total of class hours attended in the university of origin will be converted in credits.

The final mark for a student who began a course of study following the Old Plan in another university and who has transferred to the UB in order to complete their degree following the UB’s New Plan will be weighted manually rather than by computer.

c) Application for the weighting of a mark

Students wishing to have a record of their weighted mark must apply for this, as the university does not automatically provide this service.

Contents of the text weighting the final mark:

The following texts will apply except in those cases when there is a special call for a particular weighting that is different.

Students having completed their studies according to the New Plan or having adapted from the Old Plan to the New Plan:

"In compliance with the current regulations, the final mark will be weighted according to the following formula: number of credits for each subject successfully completed multiplied by the student’s final mark and the result divided by the total number of credits obtained.

CjQj
------ = QP
Cj

The mark will be expressed by one of the descriptors in the following table: Aprovat (a pass): 1; Notable (a distinction): 2; Excel·lent (excellent): 3; Matrícula d’Honor (honours): 4; Convalidada (officially validated): 1"

Students having completed all their studies according to the Old Plan

"In compliance with the current regulations, the final mark will be weighted according to the following formula: the result of the sum total of marks obtained for successfully completed subjects divided by the total number of successfully completed subjects.

The mark will be expressed by one of the descriptors in the following table: Aprovat (a pass): 1; Notable (a distinction): 2; Excel.lent (excellent): 3; Matrícula d’Honor (honours): 4; Convalidada (officially validated): 1".
