PRESENTATION
"Groundwater: a hidden, strategic and global resource" is the theme selected for the UB Institute for Water Research 2013 Symposium. Groundwater is the largest source of freshwater available on our planet to meet the needs of a growing population requiring an ever-higher per capita supply as economic development and social welfare advance. Water is essential for life and indispensable for human health and well-being, as well as for preserving the environment. Despite this, almost one fifth of the world's population does not have access to a safe and sufficient source of drinking water.
The volume of groundwater stored in geological formations (aquifers) is far superior to the volume of water flowing in rivers or stored naturally in lakes and significantly higher than the volume of water retained by reservoirs built to regulate the temporal variability of rainfall and guarantee supply at all times. Groundwater exploration, monitoring, modelling and management have undergone significant developments in recent decades. These advances help us understand the dynamics of aquifer systems and how we can manage our use of this resource to ensure its sustainability. The scientific disciplines and related techniques, such as geology, geophysics, geochemistry, hydraulic engineering and computer science, among others, have played a hugely important role in furthering our scientific knowledge of groundwater, dismantling old myths and superstitions.
The "Groundwater: a hidden, strategic and global resource" symposium aims to present the developments and trends in the study of groundwater from a triple perspective: administration, business, and research. To this end, a panel of prestigious national and international speakers has been selected to present and discuss a wide range of topics related to groundwater, focusing on three of the resource's most important properties: its hidden location, its strategic role for human supply and its global distribution over large geographical areas, depending on the geological characteristics of the subsoil. The programme includes the presentation of invited papers and will conclude with a round table discussion on the most relevant conclusions drawn from the symposium.
As the natural environment that plays host to groundwater recharge, transmission, storage, and utilisation is geological, the Symposium, organised annually by the University of Barcelona's Water Institute, will move from its usual venue at the Faculty of Law to the Faculty of Geology at the UB.
