Advanced training, harnessing talent, and knowledge transfer are the cornerstones of knowledge excellence structures.
The interaction between knowledge management infrastructures and the research institutes of universities and other public and private scientific entities lay the foundations for obtaining a critical mass capable of generating excellence.
Although there is almost unanimous agreement on the need for more interaction between research and business, unknown territory still lies between the two worlds.
The objectives of the conference are, firstly, to examine the reasons for this seemingly hard-to-bridge gap and, secondly, to gain a better understanding of the needs of both actors in regard to knowledge transfer.
The BKC commissioned the University of Barcelona's Institute for Water Research to organise a conference on transfer in the world of water at the Pedralbes campus in the south of the city, which, in addition to hosting various forms of teaching, is home to CSIC, UB and UPC centres, as well as structures for interaction between the business world and academia.
The potential of this joint campus for water science has gone unnoticed by many internal and external stakeholders who have instead valued other, perhaps more high-profile locations.
The organisers have brought together speakers from a wide range of backgrounds and affiliations, capable of providing information, from various perspectives, on how science is transferred and how the water campus can help facilitate that transferral.
The fact that this confluence appears in Barcelona is no coincidence; the wider metropolitan area is home to numerous water-related entities ranging from large, small, and medium-sized companies to research institutes, administrations and foundations, not forgetting the major water users: farmers and industry. Since ancient times, Barcelona has served as a laboratory for water use: domestic usage, maritime transport, agricultural usage, purification and re-use... The lack of uniform rainfall and temporary water shortages have demanded a high degree of ingenuity to cope with the droughts.
