Every year on 22 March, the United Nations commemorates World Water Day. IdRA will contribute to the occasion with its traditional World Water Day Event, which this year focuses on the management of droughts and floods in Spain.
The conference on floods will be given by Dr Jorge Olcina Cantos, Professor of Regional Geographical Analysis at the University of Alacant. Dr Olcina has focused his research on various geographical topics - climate and climate change, natural hazards, water resources and management, geographical theory, spatial planning. He was a rapporteur for the UNESCO International Year of Planet Earth (2008), an evaluator for the 5th Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC, 2014), and he sits on the Editorial Board of several scientific journals on territorial and environmental issues.
Dr Pilar Paneque Salgado, Professor of Human Geography at the Pablo de Olavide University, will present a paper on drought risk management and planning. Dr. Paneque is also Project Coordinator for the European "Empowering Climate Resilience" project (CARE), Head Researcher for the state planning project "Evaluation of the socio-institutional vulnerability to droughts" (EVALSOC), and co-director of the "Agua y Territorio" journal.
