Water, along with the abundance of oxygen in the atmosphere and the existence of life, is the feature that distinguishes Earth from other planets in the solar system. While the blue of the oceans and white of the clouds make the presence of water evident on the planet we inhabit, even from space, in recent decades, there has been a great deal of interest in searching for water on other planets. The hydrosphere, like all other components of the climate system, is already experiencing the effects of global warming, mainly due to the vast quantities of greenhouse gas emissions.
The fact that Javier Martín-Vide is both the director of the Institute for Water Research (IdRA) and coordinator of the Catalan Expert Group on Climate Change (GECCC) allowed for the organisation of a joint meeting: the 2018 IdRA Symposium and the 8th Technical Conference of the GECCC and the CADS (the Advisory Board for Sustainable Development in Catalonia). IdRA is one of the 17 research institutes at the University of Barcelona, bringing together 115 researchers with the common goal of studying water from a wide variety of academic perspectives. The GECCC is made up of 75 researchers from different fields who, with the support of the CADS, have made a decisive contribution to Climate Change Reports in Catalonia.
The 2018 IdRA Symposium-8th Technical Conference of the GECCC and the CADS addressed water issues in the context of climate change in three blocks: 1) Water, agriculture and climate change; 2) Water, economy and climate change and 3) From rainfall series to water capture and management. In total, there were 7 presentations given by renowned specialists working or representing various groups and institutions (IdRA, GECCC, CADS, WMO, ACA, IRTA, UB). The event was organised by IdRA, with support from the Faculty of Geography and History at the University of Barcelona.
