World Water Day 2010: talk given by Ph. Dr. Stephen Foster from the World Bank

Talk on «Urban Groundwater Use: Policy Issues in a Thirsty  World», given by Stephen  Foster, Groundwater Management Team Director (GW-MATE) at the World Bank.

Academic event to mark World Water Day

The 22 March is World Water Day, established by the United Nations to raise public awareness of the need for the conservation and development of water resources. World Water Day 2010 was dedicated to the theme of water quality. To mark this event, the UB Water Research Institute organized a round table and the talk «Urban groundwater use: Policy issues in a thirsty world» given by Stephen Foster, director of the World Bank's groundwater management team. The event was held on Monday 22 March at 10.30 am in the Aula Magna of the UB Faculty of Law.

The round table participants were: Gabriel Borràs, Area Coordinator at the Catalan Water Agency (ACA); Damià Barceló, Director of the Catalan Institute for Water Research (ICRA); Eloy García, Director of the Madrid Institute of Advanced Studies in Water Technologies (IMDEA-Aigua); José Benavente, Deputy Director of the University of Granada's Institute of Water; and Francisco Luque, Head of Planning and Production at the company Aigües de Barcelona. Before the round table, a talk was given by Stephen Foster, lecturer at the University of London and the former president of the International Association of Hydrogeologists.

World Water Day 2010 was dedicated to the theme of water quality, to show that this aspect of water resources management is as important as quantity. The aim was to raise awareness of the need for the conservation of healthy ecosystems and human well-being, and to tackle the challenges involved in the growing demand for water. In addition, the objective was to highlight the importance of water quality and to urge governments, organizations, communities and people worldwide to adopt measures and carry out activities to prevent contamination, treat water and restore quality.
