Symposium Papers
Since 2007, the Water Research Institute of the University of Barcelona organizes an annual symposium on topics of current interest within their areas of activity. In this edition of 2012, the topic under discussion was focused on bio-waste and sludge and particularly, in the sludge generated by waste water purification. The generation of sludge is a remarkable issue on environmental management within the European Union. EU sludge production has been estimated to reach 12.8 million tons in 2020. The development of treatment processes to remove, reduce or reuse sludge to dispose it as by-product is crucial for a proper environmental management. On the other hand, there is a need to upgrade or establish national and international sludge regulations to determine the physical, chemical and microbiological properties which are necessary for an appropriate derivation of sludge. This Symposium has presented the state of the national and European regulation, as well as the traditional sludge treatments and some of the developing new sludge treatments.
