Water ponds, a mortal trap for Bonelli's eagles

One of the causes of mortality of Bonelli's eagles of which it is had less information is to be drowned in ponds of irrigation or prevention of fire. Until now few cases were known because it is not easy to find the carcasses. But the fact that at the moment a great number of Bonelli's eagles marked with emitters exists facilitates the recovery of the dead animals and, therefore, it allows to have a very good sample of the mortality causes of the eagles. In the last years it has been possible to certify that certain types of ponds can suppose a mortal trap for the eagles. The more worrisome case that is known corresponds to a pair of adults of a same territory who died together in a pond of irrigation.

Bonelli's eagles use fluvial courses and dams to capture some prey like aquatic birds. In addition, they also likes to take baths with regularity. Many ponds of irrigation or prevention of fire usually are very deep and they do not have structures that facilitate the entrance or exit of the animals. In these types of ponds, in addition to Bonelli's eagles, the death of many other raptors is known, but also amphibians and mammals. For this reason it would be important to incorporate mechanisms that allow the exit of the animals without the functionality of the pond was affected, specially in the ponds that are located in territories of Bonelli's eagles or in dispersal areas of the young ones.
