The fasciatus subspecies has a clear circum-Mediterranean distribution in the European continent. It occurs in countries such as Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, Croatia, Albania and Bulgaria, with a population constituted by 884-1091 pairs. The main core of this population is located in Spain, with between 650 and 713 pairs, almost 70% of the European population.

Decreasing

In the last few years, the populations of this eagle have declined in most of the European territory, where a 20% of the nesting population has disappeared in the last decade.

Distribution in Spain

In Spain the species is suffering a general decline, although there are important differences among provinces. Since the first exhaustive census in 1986, the eagles have become extinct in 6 provinces, have decreased in 17 and have stabilized or lightly increased in 19, although in the last cases the populations could have been underestimated during the first period.

The reason for this decrease could be an unbalance of the main demographic parameters, mortality and productivity, on account of which it is not possible for the populations to stabilize.
