Grants
Grants
There are several public or private bodies that offer student grants for master and PhD studies. Applications for these grants are called annually. Grants as FPU, given by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, FI, given by the Catalan Government, APIF, given by the University of Barcelona, and BR, given by the University of Girona require a specific agreement between student applicant and an official research group and impose restrictions regarding the number of grants per group and the number of applicants per grant-supervisor.
The different research groups participating in this master will coordinate applications in order to maximize academic quality, scientific interest and chances of success, and may accordingly propose a distribution of applicants across universities and supervisors. In order to do that, the applicant may be called for a personal interview.
In order to apply for an FPU, FI, APIF or BR grant the student should email the co-ordinator of the APhil doctorate, Manuel García-Carpintero, and express their interest (email: aphil.phd@gmail.com). They should attach to this email:
(i) A letter of interest
(ii) A curriculum vitae
(iii) Their academic transcript
(iv) A sample of work representative of their interests and skills, e.g. a piece of coursework or an independently written paper, between 3000 and 6000 words, in Spanish, Catalan or (preferably) English.
(v) Two letters of reference.
[Items (i) to (iii) can be identical to the material submitted for the application for admission to the programme ("preinscription").]
If a grant competition is announced, we then select those amongst the candidates whom we can support for an application (the decision will be based on our assessment of candidates' aptitude, as well as on our assessment of their chances of success in the grant competition in question).
For your information, here is also some of the small print regarding the obligations of grant-holders:
Receiving a grant implies general and particular rights and duties: The general rights and duties are the ones established by the grant-agency in the call. The particular rights and duties are the ones established by the specific university/department and the specific research group to which the grant is attached. Grant-supervisors must inform the applicants about these particular rights and duties before the student decides to go ahead with the application. The formal application to a grant implies that, in case of being offered the grant and accepting it, the student undergoes, and is committed to fulfil, these particular duties as well as the general ones. 3-4 year grants are subject to annual assessment and renewal; failure to comply with grant duties, either general or particular, can lead to the termination of the grant.
Every 3-4 year grant has a grant-supervisor. This supervisor is chosen by the student in agreement with the research group to which the application is attached. The grant- supervisor will:
(a) Prior to the acceptance of the supervision, inform the applicant about the particular rights and duties corresponding to the specific university/department/research group
(b) Decide, together with the applicant, the topic of the research project
(c) Help the applicant in the process of application and advise him/her during the elaboration of the grant research project for the application.
(d) Advise the grant-student in the development of the research project during the grant period
(e) Monitor fulfilment of the duties incurred by students in receipt of grants
(f) Submit the annual report to the grant agency recommending or not recommending renewal
(g) Assist the grant-student in any other matter pertaining to the adequate satisfaction of the goals of the grant.
