Introduction to Metaphysics, through the discussion of some of the core issues:
1. Abstract Entities
2. Causation and Laws of Nature
3. Modality and Possible Worlds
4. Personal Identity
7. Free Will
The seminar will be vertebrated by the discussion of the papers in Contemporary Debates in Metaphysics, edited by Sider, Hawthorne, & Zimerman (Blackwell 2008). There will be ten two and a half hour sessions. Except for the first introductory one, sessions will begin by short critical presentations by students, followed by open general discussion, led by the instructor.
40% presentation and participation in the discussions
60% two short critical essays (2000-3000 words approx), in connection with two of the nine sections.
