Neurochemical Modulation in Posteromedial Default-mode
Network Cortex Induced by Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

Main results

1) Increased GABA concentration was found in posteromedial cortex after intermittent TBS.

2) Induced distal neurotransmitters change was related to baseline intrinsic connectivity.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether regional Glx (Glutamate + Glutamine) and GABA could be modulated within the Default Mode Network (DMN) after experimentally-controlled induction of plasticity and to study the effect of intrinsic connectivity over brain responses to stimulation.

Associations of regional Glx and GABA
with DMN functional properties and cognition in healthy aging.

Main results

1) Glx and Glx/GABA were associated with the iFC of the two main DMN nodes.

2) Furthermore, spatial¬maps showed that Glx/GABA was positively associated with DMN connectivity in distal regions of the PMC, while the inverse correlation was observed for the PMC local connectivity.

3) PMC Glx was positive correlated with the attentional component of memory while GABA was associated with improved memory consolidation and with less subjective memory complaints.

This work will be presented at the 22nd Annual Meeting
of the Organization for Human Brain Mapping

The main goal of the current study was to assess the relationship between Glx (Glutamate + Glutamine), GABA and Glx/GABA ratio of the Posteromedial Cortex (PMC) and the intrinsic functional connectivity (iFC) of the two core regions of the Default Mode Network (DMN): the medial Prefrontal Cortex (mPFC) and the Precuneus (PCU) in an aged population. Secondly, we explored the relationship between PMC neurochemistry and cognitive performance.
