History
The foundation of the modern Faculty of Sciences at the University of Barcelona is generally agreed to date from 1845, when the Ministry of Education approved the University's study plan including a degree in Sciences consisting of 5 years of elementary studies and 2 years of Sciences proper. In 1900, science studies were reorganised into 4 branches or specialities, one of which was Natural Sciences. In 1910, the Section of Natural Sciences was formally created within the Faculty of Sciences. In 1953, this section was divided into Biology and Geology sections. Finally, in 1973, the Faculty of Biology -the first in Spain- was created at the University of Barcelona.
The Faculty of Biology remained in the old building in Plaça Universitat (University Square) until 1982, when it moved to the present location in a modern building of fine and functional architecture located in the new campus in Pedralbes, one of the city's most select residential areas.
