The University of Barcelona has a fermentation facility for teaching, research and client purposes. There are 2 vessels available; one 10 L Biostat B and one 50L Biostat U, both are stirred tank reactors with a variety of control functions.
Biostat B supports both microbial and cell culture applications, especially designed by laboratory . It is equip with probes, built-in pumps, vessel with drive and digital measurement and control: oxygen enrichment, substrate addition profile, dual substrate control, pH control, etc. Biostat B is connected to MFCS/win SCADA system (an enhanced supervisory Control and Data Acquisition software package).
The Biostat U is a stainless steel frame design pilot-scale system for microbial and cell culture processes, with automatic in-situ sterilization and equip with probes, built-in pumps, vessel with drive and digital measurement and control.
Our objectives are:
Optimization and scale up of production processes.
Obtaining cellular mass, extra cellular and intracellular products.
Bacteriophages and fungi virus replication.
Other applications of the Fermentation Unit are:
Biological and enzymatic treatment and reactions.
Solid-liquid separation applications.
Microorganisms, cysts and eggs of parasites concentration.
