Plant Ecophysiology, phytoremediation
of heavy metals |
Research interests:
Development of new selection criteria for fast and reliable characterization
of the traits actually determining yield is studied for implementation
of cereal breeding programs. Ecophysiology of cultivated cereals
in the Mediterranean area, palaeoenvironmental reconstruction and
the study of water use efficiency of wheat and barley crops is also
consider. Management of natural resources and landscape is the research
scope in Mediterranean area. Together with Prof. Jose Luis Araus,
Dr Jordi Bort and PhD students Cristina Caldelas and Santiago de
la Iglesia, we are conducting the research on the use of natural
resources, plants, for the removal of metals from contaminated waters
and soils. The accumulation and tolerance of plants to metals is
being assessed. The biochemical mechanisms of tolerance and accumulation
of metals in plants and its possible manipulation are being characterised.
Management techniques to improve the performance of plants for metal
uptake are being explored. Identification of natural products conferring
tolerance to metal stress is being studied.
Current research projects:
Advanced technologies for the treatment of industrial and coastal
waters of the mediterranean region (MEDINDUS) European Comission
(inco-ct-2004-509159) Corresponsable científica.
A cheap easy-to-handle desalination approach for crop irrigation
under mediterranean conditions (IRRISEASOIL) European Comission
