Abstract

When we read a newspaper, listen to a friend or speak over the phone, our main concern lies in the ideas that are communicated. We care aboutwhat the news is about, or about the message we want to convey. Meanwhile, our brains are involved in considerable information processing which we do not pay much attention to. Our brains activate their mental dictionary, they construct grammatical sentences, they conjugate verbs and more generally abide by every linguistic rule in the language we are using. In other words, our brains transform language into ideas and ideas into language.

As a way to better understand how this is possible, the seminar will present a collection of representative research on how the brain processes language. The examples will be taken from the connected disciplines of cognitive psychology, cognitive neuroscience and neuropsychology. The seminar will comprise master classes, reading and commenting scientific publications, as well as training in practical experimental methods. The general objective is to provide students with the reasoning and methodological tools that are needed for investigating psycholinguistic issues.
