    Chemistry Platform for the Development of New Drugs

This group seeks to use combinatorial sciences to obtain two types of new compounds: pharmacological agents (medicinal chemistry) and polymers (new materials field). The synthetic approaches we study include total synthesis (target oriented), solid phase methods (especially addressed to peptides) and multicompoment reactions (diversity oriented). Our work involves two complementary elements: the exploration of new methodologies for the preparation of libraries, and the application of these methodologies in the search for new compounds. In terms of methodology, we work on new fundamental reactivity, supports, handles, scaffolds and privileged structures in biology. In the field of medical chemistry, our studies focus mainly on two types of processes: cancer and the central nervous system.

Our work related to cancer involves products of marine origin, and heterocyclic, peptide and depsipeptide compounds. Our central nervous system work focuses on compounds capable of blocking response to chemical substances or thermal stimuli, and compounds that mediate nocireceptor inflammation, particularly those which inhibit ion channels, such as the nocireceptor VR1 and/or ionotropic receptors for L-glutamate. We are also working on the use of such compounds in the treatment of diseases or conditions mediated by the activity of the receptors referred to (for example, the experience of pain). Recently, we have started the chemical development of new sensors and fluorescent agents for use chemical biology and diagnostics.
