The origin of the Department dates back to 1912, when Francisco Pardillo Vaquer wins the Chair of Crystallography and Mineralogy at the Faculty of Science, Universitat de Barcelona (UB), which was recently created. The year 2012 was the centenary of the Department.s.
The teaching activity of the Department is mainly focused on Geology (UB) and Geological Engineering Degrees, (in collaboration with the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya), and their respective Master Degrees. The Department also participates in the teaching of masters both with other departments of the UB (Teacher Training on Secondary School, Cultural Heritage Management) and with other universities and research centres (Energy Engineering (UB-UPC); Crystallography and Crystallization (UIMP-CSIC)).
Research in the Department is structured around three Consolidated Research Groups: Crystallography; Applied and Environmental Mineralogy; Mineral Resources: Ore Deposits, Applications and Sustainability. There is a diversity of research topics both in the field of basic and applied research: structural and crystallographic characterization of minerals and other industrial compounds (ceramics, cements, organic chemicals, pharmaceutical,...), applications within the field of energy and thermal protection, recycling and environmental conservation, characterization and exploration of mineral resources, cultural heritage preservation...
