Responsibilities held by the rector

The rector is the highest academic authority at the University and acts as its legal representative. As a unipersonal governing body, the rector is responsible for the government and management of the University.

The rector presides over the collegiate bodies the University Senate, the Governing Council and the Advisory Board. He or she sits on the Board of Trustees and is responsible for implementing its agreements. The rector is also ex officio President of the group of institutions that together form the University of Barcelona Group or UB Group.

In accordance with the legislation applicable in each case, the rector's responsibilities are to:
- officially represent the University before public authorities and public- and private-sector institutions, or to delegate such representation as required;
- issue, by virtue of the powers conferred on him or her by the King of Spain, the academic certificates certifying the completion by UB students of the homologated courses delivered by the University and also issue, in his or her own name, the academic certificates certifying the completion by UB students of UB-specific degrees, diplomas and other such studies;
- appoint and dismiss the University's governors;
- appoint and dismiss the University's vice-rectors and delegate powers to these;
- appoint and dismiss the University's general secretary;
- appoint the University's general manager, with the approval of the Board of Trustees, and dismiss the general manager, having heard the Governing Council;
- preside over the foundations and participate in the governing bodies of the institutions and companies that form the University of Barcelona Group, either personally or through the appointment of one or more than one University representative;
- appoint the University's academic staff and its administrative and service staff, and sign staff members' contracts;
- appoint the members of those University committees that determine the admission and hiring of academic staff;
- adopt the decisions taken in matters regarding the administrative status and incompatibility of University staff, and exercise the legal authority required;
- resolve administrative appeals in compliance with the text of the UB Statute and the current legislation;
- authorize the University's financial expenses and order its payments;
- exercise all governing and administrative powers that the UB Statute does not expressly confer on other governing bodies, and all such powers as are conferred on him or her in the text of the current legislation and the UB Statute.
Committees on which the rector sits
- The rector is statutory president of all the delegated committees of the Governing Council and may delegate the presidential duties of these committees to others.
- The rector presides over the following committees:
- The Economic Committee (Article 178 of the UB Statute)
- The Regulation Committee (Article 62.3 of the UB Statute)
