Frequently Asked Questions

I am not a computer scientist. Should I apply for this course?

All you need is to have some previous experience programming (writing code) and studying or using statistics. All class assignments will be in Python, but if you have programming experience in a different language you will probably be fine. We can provide some links to some online tutorials to become familiar with Python. This pre-work should be enough.

Is this the first time this course is offered?

This is the third edition of the course. 45 students have successfully completed the course during the previous editions.

Is there homework?

Each lecture proposes homework that students can complete at home on a voluntary basis, but most of the practical work of the program is concentrated in three scheduled datatons.

What is a dataton?

A dataton is a special training session where you will collaborate intensively with other students on small data projects. Each dataton will have a specific focus. They will start with a presentation about the event.

Then participants suggest ideas and form teams, based on individual interests and skills. Then the main work of the dataton begins, which will last several hours. At the end of dataton, each group presents their results.

What is the outcome of this course?

Upon graduating, you will be comfortable designing, implementing, and communicating the results of a data science project. You should feel confident pursuing a job as an entry-level data scientist. By doing the assignments and the capstone project you will have a portfolio of projects that demonstrates your ability to do the job as a data scientist.

Can I work in groups for the Capstone Project?

Yes, in groups of up to four people.

Will I be well-networked after this course?

Students should attend several Masterclasses during the program period. These Masterclasses will be given by Data Scientists from leading companies. Besides this, we will promote your participation in events organized by the Barcelona data science community, such as @databeers DataBeersBCN.
