Canals Artigas, Miquel

Miquel Canals

Dr. Miquel Canals Artigas

Catedràtic

(Full Professor)

My most recent research activity has focused on the multidisciplinary study of the ocean, within the frame of large-scale RTD projects such as HERMES, HERMIONE, PROMETEO and GRACCIE, with the aim of understanding the functioning of the marine ecosystem at large and of hotspot ecosystems in particular, from external forcings to living resources.

My initiation in scientific research started in 1977 as internal student at the Dept. of Stratigraphy and Historical Geology of UB. From 1979 to 1982 I studied Messinian submarine outcrops at CSIC and participated in the works leading to the publication of the first geological map of the Spanish continental shelf in Almeria. Since October 1982 I have been working at UB, except for a short period at CNRS in 2000-01. My scientific career has envolved in parallel with UB’s CRG Marine Geosciences, which was constituted in 1992.

My main research interests are the following: (i) Role of the ocean in past and present global change; (ii) Monitoring of the marine environment; (iii) Marine sedimentary processes and products, biogeochemical fluxes and C cycle, with a special focus on the deep ocean; (iv) Polar marine research; (v) Marine geohazards; and (vi) Seafloor mapping.

Distinction of Generalitat de Catalunya Autonomous Government to the Promotion of University Research, Category of Recognized Researchers (2004).

Award of the “International Cartographic Association” (ICA) Official Committee to the “Map of the seafloor relief of Catalonia” published by ICC (2004).

Award NOVARE ENDESA of Energy to CRG Marine Geosciences, member of EOLIMAR Tecnología AIE, within the category "New Renewable Energy and Energy Sources", for the project "Support Tool to the Installation and Management of Offshore Wind Farms".

King Jaume I Award (Premi Rei Jaume I) to the Protection of Nature, by Generalitat Valenciana Autonomous Government

Associate editor of Oceanologica Acta (1999-03). Member of the Scientific Advisory Board of Geologica Acta (2008-present).

Member of the Alt Consell Consultiu en Investigació, Desenrotllament i Innovació de la Presidència de la Generalitat Valenciana (2008-present)

15 PhD Theses directed at UB, Univ. of Western Brittany, Univ. of Ghent and Univ. of Utrecht
