The Doctoral Programme in Biomedicine concentrates
the academic resources of the University of Barcelona in the area
of advanced training of doctoral students in biomedical research.
This new Doctoral Programme is initially regulated
by Royal Decree 56/2005, of January 21, 2006 and later adapted to
the Royal Decree 1393/2007, of october 29, 2007. It is situated
within the framework of the educational reforms at postgraduate
level aimed at creating a common European Higher Education Area.
From 2006-07 on, the Doctoral Programme in Biomedicine
replaces the following doctoral programs: Cell Biology and Pathology,
Biomedicine, Neuroscience, Biopathology in Medicine, Immunology
and Microsystems, Sensors and Activators Engineering.
The sequencing of the human genome represented
a key event in biomedical research, providing a magnificent opportunity
for the study and understanding of complex biological systems and
the molecular foundations of diseases. A multidisciplinary approach
to knowledge will be essential for future scientists. Advances in
techniques and basic research in cell biology and molecular biology
form an integral part of research in molecular pathology, molecular
genetics, pharmacology and physiology.
Thus, the Doctoral Programme in Biomedicine combines
the traditional areas of biomedical study in a single interdisciplinary
model. It involves the participation of highly-respected scientists
from a range of specialized areas, university departments, faculties,
and research institutes (the Barcelona
Science Park, IDIBAPS,
IDIBELL,
CSIC
and others), whose different experimental approaches will enrich
the programme.
