Both a period of academic training and a period of organised research must be passed in order to obtain a PhD degree from the University of Barcelona. The doctoral program (in Catalan language “programa de Doctorat”) is the organized calendar of activities related to both academic training and organised research carried out to obtain a PhD degree, that ends with the presentation of the doctoral thesis. The period of academic training involves the attendance to theoretical courses about basic and applied subjects on Analytical Chemistry. This period generally corresponds with one or more than one official master's degree. The period of organised research involves the execution of research activities in the heart of one of the research groups at the Department of Analytical Chemistry or in another recognized research organization. Access to the doctoral programs. Period of formation It is compulsory to hold an official graduate degree in order to join the period of academic training. This degree may be granted by any Spanish University or by any other institution member of the European Higher Education Area. This graduate degree must allow the holder to follow an official master’s degree. Graduates from educational systems not members of the European Higher Education Area may also access to the doctoral studies without the previous recognition of their degrees as equivalent to the Spanish degrees. Besides, the University of Barcelona will check two important points: a) the foreign degree must accredit a level of formation equivalent to that corresponding to the Spanish degree; b) the foreign degree must allow its holder to follow a postgraduate program in the foreign country where it was granted. It must be stressed that this procedure does not implicate, in any case, the recognition of the foreign degree as equivalent to any Spanish degree. Access to the doctoral programs.
