Brief description:

I am an ecosystem ecologist specialized in carbon cycling in aquatic systems.

My research interest is broadly to understand how aquatic ecosystems function and how they respond to local and global drivers, using carbon biogeochemistry as a proxy for ecosystem functioning.
My current research addresses how carbon is processed in aquatic ecosystems. This includes ecosystem-level understanding of lake metabolism, carbon burial in lake and reservoir sediments, biogeochemical transformation of dissolved organic carbon, inorganic carbon dynamics, calcite interactions with biological processes, and greenhouse gas emissions from a range of systems, including streams, lakes, reservoirs, lagoons and ponds. These are all crucial and yet poorly understood processes occurring in inland and transitional waters and believed to be key in the continental carbon cycle. Most of my research has focused in Mediterranean ecosystems, as they are perfect environments to study the biogeochemical dynamics of the aquatic-terrestrial boundaries.

I have also experience in coastal lagoon ecology, ecology and dynamics of subermerged macrophytes, underwater light climate, Holocene palaeolimnology, ostracod shell geochemistry, food webs, metal pollution and sustainable food systems for human populations.
