Admission and monitoring of the thesis proposal

Doctoral thesis monitoring committees
  1. The Doctoral Program Committee for Economics designates a monitoring committee for each doctoral thesis. This committee will have the following functions:

    • To approve thesis applications (thesis proposal admissions) during the first academic year of enrolment.
    • To monitor the most important advances and results of each thesis on a yearly basis.
    • To provide students with advice and guidance.

  2. Within a month of the end of the enrolment period set by the UB for the doctoral program in Economics, the Doctoral Program Committee for Economics will designate a monitoring committee for each thesis, in accordance with the following criteria:

    • The monitoring committee must consist of three doctors from the doctoral program in Economics to supervise the thesis and an external evaluator who is an expert on the subject of the thesis.
    • None of the committee members should be the doctoral candidate’s thesis supervisor.
    • At least one of the three committee members must be from a different line of research to that of the thesis supervisor.
Thesis proposal admission
  1. The admission of the thesis proposal indicates the student's consolidation in the doctoral program in Economics.
  2. The monitoring committee approves thesis applications (thesis proposal admissions) during the first academic year of enrolment based on a report that must include the title, objectives, methodology, initial bibliography and expected work plan (clearly stating whether the candidate intends to undertake the program on a full- or part-time basis). The report must be signed by the doctoral candidate and his or her thesis supervisor, and three copies of the report must be submitted: one in English, one in Catalan and one in Spanish.
  3. To request the thesis proposal admission, the student must complete this application form (available in due course) and attach the report mentioned in point 2.
  4. The deadlines for submitting the application for the thesis proposal admission are:

    • before 30 January in the first academic year of enrolment, or
    • before 30 June in the first academic year.

  5. The monitoring committee approves or rejects the thesis proposal admission by means of a single document for each thesis, signed by all committee members, along with the report submitted by the student. When the committee rejects the proposal, this must be accompanied by a reasoned explanation.
Monitoring of the thesis proposal

Before 30 June each year, the student must submit a report outlining the progress made in the thesis to the monitoring committee designated by the Doctoral Program Committee for Economics. The report must be approved by the student’s thesis supervisor. In the second year of enrolment of the thesis, the student must present a paper before the monitoring committee.
