Admission requirements for doctoral studies (research period)

A. Admission procedure for the research period of the doctoral program

In addition to the general admission requirements for doctoral studies at the University of Barcelona listed here, applicants must also fulfil the specific requirements set out below:

  • At least 60 completed credits in the university master’s degree in Economics at the University of Barcelona (UB). However, the requirement for submitting a thesis project is completion of all master’s degree credits (120) with an average mark of 7.0 (Ph.D. Pass). Applicants who satisfy these specific requirements must send their application for admission to the Doctoral Program Committee for the program in Economics, together with a current curriculum vitae and a letter of motivation, or personal statement, which describes the subject of their proposed thesis and is signed by their thesis supervisor.
  • Applications are also welcome from students with a master’s degree that is equivalent to the university master’s degree in Economics at the UB in accordance with the criteria set by the Doctoral Program Committee. The doctoral program in Economics can admit applicants with other university master’s degrees, but the degree must include microeconomics, macroeconomics, mathematics and econometrics. In this case, consideration will be given to the content of applicants’ completed studies and to their interest in conducting research in one of the lines offered by the doctoral program. Applicants must provide a current curriculum vitae, their academic record, any evidence of English language proficiency and a letter of motivation, or personal statement, which indicates the subject of their proposed thesis and the signed approval of their thesis supervisor. All of these papers must be sent to the Doctoral Program Committee for the program in Economics.
