The cities of Barcelona and Tarragona
Barcelona, the ancient Roman city of Barcino, is the capital of Catalonia and the traditional gateway to Spain. Its privileged location and history have moulded the character of this bilingual, cosmopolitan city. Visit the Gothic Quarter, the Rambles - the city's cultural melting pot - the magic fountains of Montjuïc, Gaudí's architectural masterpieces, and the numerous museums: Catalonia's National Art Museum (MNAC), the Museum of Archaeology, the Museum of History, the Museum of the History of the City, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona (MACBA), and of course the Picasso, Miró, and Tàpies museums.
Tarragona, the ancient Roman city of Tarraco, was capital of Hispania Citerior and later of the Tarraconense province. In 2001 the city was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. In spite of the passing of time, the city retains much of the splendour of the Roman era. It was one of the few cities in Hispania that built a circus, a theatre and an amphitheatre.
Weather
Both Barcelona and Tarragona are blessed with a pleasant Mediterranean climate. Extreme temperatures are rare; in September, the average temperature in both cities is 21º C. This mild weather and the animated street-life add to the cities' appeal. Eat in open-air restaurants (traditionally, meals are taken at fairly late hours), or have a drink on a terrace on the shoreline of the Mediterranean, where the sunlight has not changed since the earliest human civilizations appeared thousands of years ago.
2002.The Gaudí Year
2002 is the 150th anniversary of the birth of the great architect Antoni Gaudí, the creator of many of the city's finest art nouveau buildings.
A program of cultural activities has been organized to mark the occasion, both for the residents of Barcelona and for visitors from all over the world. The Gaudí Year is sure to be an important international event.
