The School of Gemmology of the University of Barcelona was created by Ministerial Decree dated 22nd of October 1971. It is a teaching and research centre whose objective is the teaching of gemmology, with regard to both the training of new professionals as well as the dissemination of information. In order to carry out these aims, the School teaches the following courses: Training courses leading to the title of Gemmologist. Specialist courses on the diamond. Specialist courses on synthetic gems and treatments. All these courses are taught throughout the academic year, and the successful passing of the corresponding theoretical and practical exams leads to the obtention of the corresponding title which is awarded by the University of Barcelona.

The School also promotes the study and research on natural gems, synthetic gems and the systems of their manufacturing, as well as on all those products of different origin which may be used in the imitation of gems. Also included among its aims is that of establishing relationships with those national and foreign centres and associations that have a connection with the objectives of the School. It also collaborates in all those research projects related to gemmology, and organizes seminars, conferences and congresses in areas within its competence.

Finally, we should also add that the school organizes refresher courses to update the knowledge of professional gemmologists.
