The
School of Gemmology of the University of Barcelona was created by Ministerial
Decree dated 22nd of October 1971. It is a teaching and research centre whose
objective is the teaching of gemmology, with regard to both the training of
new professionals as well as the dissemination of information. In order to
carry out these aims, the School teaches the following courses: Training
courses leading to the title of Gemmologist. Specialist courses on the
diamond. Specialist courses on synthetic gems and treatments. All these
courses are taught throughout the academic year, and the successful passing of
the corresponding theoretical and practical exams leads to the obtention of

and the systems of their manufacturing, as well as on all those products of
different origin which may be used in the imitation of gems. Also included
among its aims is that of establishing relationships with those national and
foreign centres and associations that have a connection with the objectives of
the School. It also collaborates in all those research projects related to
gemmology, and organizes seminars, conferences and congresses in areas within
its competence.
Finally, we should also add that the school organizes refresher courses to update the knowledge of professional gemmologists.
