This third issue of On the Waterfronts gathers the papers introduced in the symposium Waterfronts of Art. Art Social for Facilitation organized by the CER POLIS in the context of the Public Art Observatory project.

The symposium was developed in Barcelona during the month of September, 1999 and had as objective to advance in the interdisciplinary approach about Public Art. From its beginnings the Observatory has managed an open concept of public art that allows an  analysis from different perspectives, at the same time that facilitates to different social agents an approach in depth to the topic. This way we can manage the study of the topic from optics so varied as the Urban Development, the Sculpture, the Design, the Urban Regeneration, the environmental studies.... This approach can be found in other regions of this Web.

The objective of the symposium Waterfronts of Art was to deepen in three topics:

  1. The first one the relationship between public art and urban development, especially in the areas of Waterfront.

  2. The second to study the role of the different social agents that you/they intervene in the development of projects of public art and

  3. in third place, to study the artist's role in the context of the urban development.

As you  will be able to appreciate in the reading of the different papers, a healthy disparity took place as for the reach and limits of the proposed topics. However I wish   to stand out the fact that this symposium gathered to more than 50 specialists and that it was open to some other ones through a virtual Forum
