Even since Darwin, we recognize that life on Earth originated once and that all organisms, either extant or extinct, are interconnected by an ancestor-descendant relationship. These relationships can be graphically displayed as a Tree, the Tree of Life, which nodes and terminals represent species and branches reflect their evolutionary history. In this class, we will provide an overview of the diversity of the Tree of Life and discuss alternative hypotheses about the origin and diversification of its main lineages.
