There are research institutions in Immunology in centers such as ICREA of the
Generalitat of Catalonia, CSIC of Spanish government, the Carlos III Institute as
well as the universities. Similarly, in the field of biotechnology, the pharmaceutical
industry is developing drugs based on the use of molecules of the immune system,
such as antibodies, cytokines, cell-specific growth factors, and the design of
new delivery systems for vaccines and antigens. This is very similar to what
happens in the field of health with the rapid generation of new therapeutic
targets and new technological approaches (proteomics and genomics). All this
made necessary the training of graduates who know depthly the functional
complexity of the immune system.
In the area of medicine, it has been realized that there is the need for
continuous updating of health professionals. This is due to the rapid evolution
of knowledge of Immunology and its rapid implementation in healthcare. For
example, the application of new technologies in cellular transplant rejection
and control by antibodies, the human and humanized antibody anticancer
treatments, application of treatments with cytokines in chronic viral
infections, new models of vaccines, new vaccine formulations, vaccines cell
