General Information

Immunology is an area of biomedical sciences that study the functional activity of the immune system under physiological and pathological conditions. His study may allow solving complex diseases with relevance in public health. In addition, the development of the methodology has been reveled as an essential tool in biotechnology, in pharmacology and in diagnosis. Immunology has multiple therapeutic applications. The field of Immunology is a crucial area in biomedical research worldwide. This fact is directly related to that, over 150 years, immunology has provided some of the most important advances in health: vaccines, transplants, antibodies, cancer therapy, cell differentiation factors, therapies and anti-inflammatory drugs. In the last hundred years, as a consequence of the interest in Immunology the Nobel Prize has been awarded more than 25 times (including in 2011). In their programs of research and development, the field of immunology is critical for the major global pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. In all the cases the Immunology departments provide great benefits in drug development. Also veterinary industries have developed important business related to animal health been implicated in the generation of vaccines and drugs applicable to the prevention of diseases in livestock, which have led to significant progress in the quality and cost of food animals.

The training of professionals in immunology, with special emphasis on graduates from the fields of biology, medicine, biochemistry, biotechnology and veterinary medicine is critical.  The aims of the Master of Advanced Immunology is to output the permanent updating requirements of healthcare professionals and veterinary in the fast evolving field of Immunology and their applications in healthcare. Furthermore, the Master aims to train professionals on the use of molecules of the immune system for the high pharmaceutical, biotech, and veterinary demand.

Over 200 different degrees in Spain, the area of research/teaching of Immunology is actually present in the curricula of biology (25), medicine (27), veterinary (13), pharmacy (11), biochemistry (17), biotechnology (7) and dentistry (11) (source of the Spanish Ministry of Education). Furthermore, the implementation of the European Higher Education Space new degrees have been created leading to the appearance of new topics related to Immunology. Therefore a large number of teachers/researchers with a strong background in Immunology will be necessary to cover the needs of the country.

The field of research in Immunology is active in Spain with a growing number of publications, at similar levels to those of France. There are research institutions in Immunology in centers such as ICREA of the Generalitat of Catalonia, CSIC of Spanish government, the Carlos III Institute as well as the universities. Similarly, in the field of biotechnology, the pharmaceutical industry is developing drugs based on the use of molecules of the immune system, such as antibodies, cytokines, cell-specific growth factors, and the design of new delivery systems for vaccines and antigens. This is very similar to what happens in the field of health with the rapid generation of new therapeutic targets and new technological approaches (proteomics and genomics). All this made necessary the training of graduates who know depthly the functional complexity of the immune system.

In the area of medicine, it has been realized that there is the need for continuous updating of health professionals. This is due to the rapid evolution of knowledge of Immunology and its rapid implementation in healthcare. For example, the application of new technologies in cellular transplant rejection and control by antibodies, the human and humanized antibody anticancer treatments, application of treatments with cytokines in chronic viral infections, new models of vaccines, new vaccine formulations, vaccines cell basis, etc.. This justifies the necessity of professional updated in this field.

Finally, in veterinary sciences, the situation is similar to the pharmaceutical area, where the application of advances in immunology is very fast. The industries in veterinary pharmaceuticals currently play a pivotal role in the development of products which can be later applied in humans. In the industrial-food factory farming the economical factor is fundamental. Application of drugs, justify the large capital investments in this industry, not to mention the growing pharmacopeia created around the treatment of diseases of pet animals. Another important factor in this field, are the diseases of selected breeds of animals, where the crossover has created multiple disease models with strong involvement of the immune system. The reasons given in the three previous cases make reasonable the appeal of deep understanding of the immune system and its associated pathologies, both by the working professional as those who are in training.
