Associate professor of Catalan Language and Sociolinguistics, director of the research network Xarxa Cruscat (acronym for Competence, Representations and Use of Catalan) at the Institut d'Estudis Catalans, and Secretary of the Centre Universitari de Sociolingüística i Comunicació ( CUSC UB/PCB ). He obtained a degree in Catalan Philology (Universitat de Barcelona, 1989) and a PhD in Linguistics (Vrije Universiteit Brussel, 1996).

His research, mostly focussed on the Catalan language area, deals with social plurilingualism and language contact phenomena; language policy and language planning, with a special attention to language in education planning; language demography (demolinguistics); and the analysis of language ideologies.

He has (co-)authored a number of books, among which: Estadística sobre els usos lingüístics Andorra 2004 (en premsa); Informe sobre la situació de la llengua (2003-2004) (2005); i Estadística sobre els usos lingüístics Catalunya 2003 (2005); El coneixement de català a Catalunya. 1996. Anàlisi sociolingüística de l'Enquesta Oficial de Població de 1996 (2000); Sociolingüística de la llengua catalana (1998); i Transmissió dels idiomes en les parelles lingüísticament mixtes (1993). He has also published numerous book chapters and articles in Journals such as Revista de Llengua i Dret, Llengua i Ús, New Language Planning Newsletter, Cuadernos de Pedagogía, Treballs de Sociolingüística Catalana, Bat. Soziolingüística Aldizkaria, LSC . He is also the (co-)editor of several volumes.
