A little about myself

A Californian by birth, I grew up on the San Francisco Peninsula (in the town of San Carlos, to be exact) along with my four brothers: Patrick, Michael, John, and Clay.

I have gone to several universities and colleges, the most relevant being San Francisco State University, where I (finally) got my Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish in 1987.

I currently make my home in Sant Cugat, Catalonia, and work at the University of Barcelona, where I'm an associate professor in the Department of English and German Philology.

Me in Moscow.

Professional interests

Being a linguist, I'm of course interested in language. My main interest is the relationship between syntax and semantics, or rather, the often-subtle influence that semantics exerts on syntax.

I am currently writing my Ph.D. thesis on the notion of grammatical construction, but I'm also very interested in the relationship between language and cognition, as well as the neurobiological foundations of language. One of these days I'll actually get around to putting my Linguistics Page together, which I promise will touch upon such matters.

So far, most of my publications have dealt with cognitive linguistics. In fact, I have co-authored an introductory textbook called Introducción a la lingüística cognitiva (click HERE for a book review in Chinese!).

I am currently a regular member of the Asociación Española de Lingüística Cognitiva (I used to be the treasurer) and have been a member of the International Cognitive Linguistics Association since 1990.
