Scientific leadership potential

Rainfall variability, atmospheric circulation patterns, climatic teleconnection indices, solar activity influence on climate, polar vortex and the role of the stratosphere in medium-range weather forecast are the keywords of Lopez-Bustins research in physical and earth sciences.

Lopez-Bustins started his scientific career at the University of Barcelona (Catalonia, Spain) in 2003 as a PhD fellow supported by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science (2003-2006). He joined the Group of Climatology. His research has been mainly focussed on topics related to rainfall variability over the Iberian Peninsula . He investigated all those factors involved in precipitation changes, e.g., atmospheric circulation in stratosphere-troposphere and solar forcing. In order to develop these topics he enjoyed two stays supported by the above mentioned Ministry in the Canary Institute of Astrophysics ( Spain ) and the Meteorological Institute of the Free University Berlin ( Germany ) in 2004 and 2005, respectively.

In 2007, Lopez-Bustins achieved his PhD in Physical Geography. In the meantime, he studied two masters on Applied Climatology and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) in the same university.

Subsequently, he got involved in a project about the impacts of the climate change on water resources in Mediterranean watersheds at the Centre for Ecological Research and Forestry Applications (Autonomous University of Barcelona). He was the technical co-coordinator of the project during the 2008-2009 period. In October 2009, he got a position as Junior Lecturer in the Physical Geography Department at the University of Barcelona .

He studied the rainfall variability since 2003. Nowadays, he is involved in three national projects in several universities to study causes and impacts of the rainfall variability according to climate change.

Scientific achievements

His main achievement is the definition of a new teleconnection pattern over the Western Mediterranean in order to study the pluviometric variability and torrential frequency in eastern Iberia .

His PhD thesis was entitled “The Western Mediterranean Oscillation and Rainfall in the Catalan Countries”. It was published in two monographs (Catalan and English versions) and five papers in international journals included in the Journal Citation Report. The thesis obtained the PhD Extraordinary prize in the Physical Geography Department and the PhD European mention from the Faculty of Geography and History.

During the last years he developed the Western Mediterranean Oscillation (WeMO). The WeMO is a new regional teleconnection pattern. It is defined in order to account for the pluviometric variability in areas of the Iberian Peninsula subjected to a weak influence of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), such as the Catalan Countries (eastern Iberia ). The recent trends of the WeMO index (WeMOi) show a clear correspondence with the evolution of rainfall in the study area. The spectral analyses also highlight this dependence of rainfall in eastern Iberia on the WeMOi. He related these recent trends to significant changes in atmospheric circulation over Europe . He made use of an innovative method for testing the use of a teleconnection pattern at daily resolution. Herein it was shown how the WeMOi at daily scale constitutes a useful tool for predicting episodes of torrential rainfall in the eastern Iberia .

He also studied the role of the stratosphere with regard to its influence on WeMO variability. He attempted to determine which factors interact with the stratospheric polar vortex in order to predict certain atmospheric circulation patterns at surface level after a few weeks. Among these factors he highlighted the 11-year sunspot cycle, the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation (QBO), the Niño, volcanoes and greenhouse gasses.

During the 2008-2009 period, he worked on a hydrological model (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) by means of GIS techniques to assess the impact of climate change on water resources in Catalonia . The model included both land uses and climate changes.
