Doctor in Geography at the University of Barcelona (1995) with a Ph.D. on history of cartography: Topographic mapping in Catalonia: from private initiatives to the regional administrative projects (1833-1941). Degree in Geography at the University of Barcelona (1981). Head of the Map Library of the Institut Cartogràfic i Geològic de Catalunya (ICC) since 2001. Cartographer of the same institution until 1982. Montaner has been involved in numerous research projects on history of cartography related to Catalan and Spanish territories from 17th to 20th centuries as well as southamerica in the 18th century. She has conducted three overseas research periods in Copenhagen (1989), Paris (1991) and Brown University (Providence, USA, 2012). She has organized various cartographical exhibitions.
As a map librarian, Montaner has specialized in the field of map cataloguing and digital map libraries, an area in which she has organized and participated in various national and international congresses. She is President of the Association of Hispano-Portuguese Public Map Libraries and past vice-chair of the International Cartographic Association Committee “Carto-Heritage into the digital” (2012-2019) . She is part of board directors of eImago Mundi and ditor member of e-perimetron.
