Capdevila

Joan Capdevila Subirana (Montmajor, 1966) directs the Regional Service of the Instituto Geográfico Nacional (National Geographic Institute)  in Catalonia. He graduated in Physics (1988) and Geography (2003) at the University of Barcelona. He entered the Corps of Engineers Geographers of the State in 1992. He is a member of Consejo Superior Geográfico (Geographic High Council) and works at the Comisión Especializada en Infraestructuras de Datos Espaciales (Committee on Spatial Data Infrastructures) and the Comisión Especializada en Nombres Geográficos  (Committee on Geographical Names). He publishes the blog IDEE, the Boletín SobreIDEs and directs the working groups Observatorio IDE (SDI Observatory) and the Grupo de Trabajo Interdisciplinar Patrimonio Cartográfico en las IDE (Interdisciplinary Working Group Cartographic Heritage on SDI).

In the field of history of cartography he has specialized in the territorial delimitation and is currently completing a doctoral thesis on the demarcation of the Hispano-French border in the nineteenth century. He is also interested in urban mapping and in the evolution of the application of digital technology to the preservation, production and publication of maps.
