The History of the Cartography Study Group (GEHC) is a multidisciplinary research team specialized in history of cartography and geographical information. We are interested in maps as geohistorical documents, and as cultural products that reflect the evolution of art, science and technology. We investigate the path of the professional cartographers, his process of formation, and the institutions in those develop his work. We have studied the nautical Medieval and Renaissance cartography, the military and colonial Spanish cartography, the modernization of the topographic cartography in Catalonia and in Spain, the evolution of the cadastral maps and the political and administrative cartography.

In the last years we have carried out a wide task of cataloging and diffusion of the cartographic documentation. Also we have dedicated an increasing attention to the task of preservation the valuable cartographic heritage of our country, a part of which is, unfortunately, in a precarious condition of conservation. At present, we work with preference with the development of the urban mapping, and especially of the evolution of Barcelona’s cartography.

From the year 1997 the GEHC has received support across successive competitive projects of research financed by the Spanish Department of Science and Technology and the Autonomous government of Catalonia (Generalitat de Catalunya), and has established contracts of research with the Diputació de Barcelona and the Institut Cartogràfic i Geològic de Catalunya. The group keeps a close collaboration with similar teams of research of Argentina, The United States, France, Great Britain, Italy, Mexico and Portugal. From the year 2009 the GEHC is a consolidated group of research recognized by the Autonomous government of Catalonia.
