EVOLUTIONARY GENETICS





Research in the Evolutionary Genetics group focuses on the study of evolution mainly at the molecular level. The comparative analysis of DNA sequences reveals valuable information on the mechanisms responsible for species evolution and also on their phylogenetic relationships. These studies are performed in a wide range of species, although many projects focus on model organisms such as Drosophila , Arabidopsis , amphioxus and Ciona . These studies majorly aim to detect natural selection in candidate genes and across the genome, to establish the significance of changes in regulatory regions and of duplications in the evolution of gene families and genetic networks, to assess population genetic structure and to follow evolutionary processes through the characterization of colonizing populations. In addition, bioinformatics tools for the evolutionary analysis of the genomes are being developed. These studies aim at providing an integrative insight into the evolution of natural populations, the acquisition of novel functions and the maintenance of animal and plant biodiversity.
