DEPARTMENT OF GEODYNAMICS AND GEOPHYSICSTHIRD CYCLE AND PhD |
The Department of Geodynamics and Geophysics participates in the Third Cycle of the Earth Sciences Programme, which is shared with the other
Departments of the Faculty of Geology.
The Coordinador of the Earth Sciences Programme:
Structure of the Third Cycle:
- Teaching Period (first year). Subjects for a minimum of 20 credits (each credit is equal to 10 class hours)
- Research Period (second year). Undertaking research under the guidance of one or more supervisors for a minimum of 12 credits

Briefly:
- To obtain a Phd degree in Geology at the University of Barcelona you must complete the Third Cycle in Earth Sciences and submit a PhD thesis.
- The Third Cycle in Earth Sciences covers two academic courses. The whole programme amounts to 32 credits (one credit is equal to 10 class hours).
In the first year, the candidate must study a number of subjects, normally between November and May for a total of 20 credits.
All the subjects in the programme are chosen by the candidate under the guidance of his or her tutor.
In the second year the student must undertake two research tasks for a total of 12 credits.
- Our students combine the Third Cycle with tasks for the PhD thesis. The candidate should therefore
apply for funding for at least three years. This must be done by the student himself.
- The subject of the Thesis is normally determined jointly by the tutor and the candidate. Normally, the subject of the thesis coincides with the
research lines of the Department.
- The registration period for the Third Cycle is usually between October and December.
The normal entrance requirement for registration for the PhD degree is the possession of a B.Sc. degree in Earth Sciences
(4 or 5 years of University Studies), even though the programme admits students with other
Science Degrees. (please consult the Web page of the Division III of the UB). In the case of
overseas students the qualification must be approved by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Culture as an
appropriate entrance qualification for the PhD degree. The department is not responsible for the homologation of diplomas.
This is responsibility of each student.
- A diploma is awarded at the end of the Third Cycle. The PhD thesis
is examined by at least five examiners in an oral examination, held in public.
- The registration fee for the Third Cycle is about 66 EUR per credit, plus an additional sum of 32 EUR.
A studentship could cover the registration fee. The cost of the DEA exam and the PhD exam are about 102 EUR.
The cost of the DEA is about 54 EUR and the PhD
Degree is about 154 EUR. These fees are subject to annual adjustments.
