The research aims for the IGU Commission on Marginalization,
Globalization and Regional and Local Responses are:
a)
To further the
understanding of marginality and the processes of marginalization through the study and analysis of factors that contribute to the
dynamics and structures of spatial marginality at various scales;
b)
To analyse
marginality as the result of human decisions, leading to the
understanding of the role of various agents in those processes;
c)
To develop
comparative approaches in order to identify various types of
marginality and put them into perspective;
d)
To study policy
responses to economic and societal problems in marginal regions in
relation to the sustainability concept of regional and societal
development, and to study the human response to global change,
including its implications for marginalization.
The 2008 Barcelona Conference is organised around themes which
explore and develop the long-term research tasks of the
commission. It will focus on:
-
New methodological approaches to globalization and
marginalization
-
Economic changes and social /cultural local responses
-
Social movements in marginal areas: actors and politics
-
