MILITARY HOUSING – HOUSING THE MILITARY IN BRAZIL. URBAN DEVELOPMENT IN FOCUS

Márcio Moraes Valença and Mariana Fialho Bonates, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil

Studies about public housing production in Brazil have emphasised the anlysis of the Institutos de Aposentadorias e Pensões (IAPs – 1937-64), the Fundação da Casa Popular (FCP – 1946-64), the Banco Nacional de Habitação (BNH – 1964-86) and, more recently, the housing programmes under the responsibility of the Caixa Econômica Federal. However, several other government institutions (including public companies) – of which both houses of the National Congress, RFFSA, ECT, Petrobrás, Vale do Rio Doce, Itaipu, the armed forces, etc. –, have promoted housing, although for a different destination, like to provide the socalled ‘functional housing’ (houses for their own personnel). This paper aims at discussing the so-called military housing estates and their role in urban development and, in particular, urban segregation.
