This article describes the informality
and precarious housing situation of more six thousand families.
The study area is located in Serviluz, an irregular local urban
occupation in Fortaleza, Brazil. Besides not owning their own
homes, residents have to deal with sand dunes along the coast
burying houses, buildings, access roads and other urban
infrastructure. The analysis of the case of the population of
Serviluz allows us to view possible social impacts and highly
segregated space that can be produced in Brazilian cities.
