General learning objectives

Geological and geotechnical site characterisation for civil engineering in public works projects; prevision and analysis of site behaviour; forecast of geological hazards; research and evaluation of geological resources (minerals, hydrogeological resources, construction materials, etc).

Basic contents of the study program

As well as providing a broad foundation in the fundamental principles of geology and its working methods, the study program is designed to prepare the geological engineering graduate to apply his or her specialist knowledge of physics, mathematics and technology in professional practice. The program for this degree qualification brings the essential elements of both academic profiles into balance.

What applicants should have

  • A solid foundation in mathematics, physics and chemistry, and a knowledge of the subjects directly related to the degree area, such as geology and earth and environmental science.

  • Analysis and synthesis skills in the areas of science and technology.

  • Potential to develop problem-solving skills in a broad range of areas.

  • Potential to develop field work skills.

  • Individual and teamwork skills, and English language competence.

Career prospects

  • Planning, management and development of activities related to geology and tectonics in public works projects, (geological surveys and mapping, public works, underground excavations, foundations, roads, etc.).

  • Research, evaluation, management and protection of natural resources (fuels, water, construction materials, metals), including waste management and storage.

  • Evaluation, forecast and management of geological hazards.

Further information

There will also be opportunities for graduate students to begin research and to continue their studies in the University of Barcelona’s doctoral programs and postgraduate studies.
