Presentació

El Grup de Recerca Consolidat en Geociències Marines (GRC Geociències Marines) de la Universitat de Barcelona (UB) quedà constituït formalment l’any 1992, i des d’aleshores ha estat reconegut com a grup de qualitat per la Generalitat de Catalunya. Els orígens del Grup cal cercar-los en treballs pioners de finals dels anys 60 i començaments dels 70 del segle passat, fets en estreta col•laboració entre la UB i el Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), amb la participació d’institucions estrangeres com la Smithsonian Institution i el Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory (Estats Units), la Universitat de Perpinyà (França) i l’Institute of Oceanographic Sciences Deacon Laboratory (Regne Unit), entre altres.

L’objectiu principal del GRC Geociències Marines és l’obtenció i la difusió de nous coneixements sobre l'estat i el funcionament de l'ecosistema marí, així com sobre els mecanismes, els impactes i els registres dels processos actius i les condicions ambientals des de la zona costanera fins les conques marines pregones, amb atenció especial als impactes antropogènics. El Grup aplica sovint el concepte “source to sink” en el disseny i la realització de les seves activitats de recerca. La producció del GRC Geociències Marines, a més del seu valor científic, té rellevància social en els camps de la gestió costanera, els recursos minerals marins, els usos del fons marí, l’avaluació de riscos naturals, la contextualització de les conseqüències del canvi climàtic, la conservació d’hàbitats marins, i la governança de l’oceà.

El GRC Geociències Marines empra plataformes i tecnologies avançades, incloent vaixells oceanogràfics moderns, vehicles subaquàtics, i facilitats analítiques i de computació. El Grup gestiona el laboratori CORELAB (vegeu Serveis), una facilitat única per a l’anàlisi no destructiva de testimonis de sediment i altres objectes geològics de composicions i mides molt diverses.

Un equip altament competent, format per geocientífics marins, biogeoquímics, paleoceanògrafs, ambientòlegs, físics, gestors de dades i experts en SIG aporta la interdisciplinarietat que el GRC Geociències Marines necessita per assolir les seves metes.

El GRC Geociències Marines es finança principalment a través de convocatòries competitives nacionals i internacionals, en especial dels programes marc de la Unió Europea, i de contractes amb empreses, consorcis i administracions.

Línies de Recerca

El GRC Geociències Marines treballa per l’assoliment d’una comprensió holística dels sistemes marins des d’una perspectiva geocientífica, tot i estudiant tant els processos i impactes actuals de tota mena com els registres del passat.

El Grup està organitzat al voltant de tres línies de treball principals que s’interrelacionen i es reforcen entre elles, cadascuna de les quals té plantejats reptes científics de gran abast pel període 2017-2019:

Cada línia de treball principal compta amb un investigador sènior que la lidera, i un colíder més jove, els quals dirigeixen i reben el suport d’investigadors júniors, doctorands i tècnics. Per a dur a terme les seves activitats de de recerca el GRC Geociències Marines utilitza instrumental propi i infraestructures de recerca pròpies i d’entitats externes. L’aplicació i el desenvolupament de models s’efectua internament i en cooperació amb altres grups.

Els projectes del Grup tenen un abast geogràfic global, amb activitats recents i en curs a l’Antàrtida, l’Àrtic, l’Atlàntic nord-oriental, el Pacífic i la Mediterrània. El Grup també té experiència en l’estudi de costes, llacs -com el Baikal, a Sibèria-, embassaments i rius, sovint per respondre a les necessitats d’empreses i administracions. És també actiu en l’àmbit costaner, en temes com la cartografia d’hàbitats, la localització de recursos, l’estabilitat i l’evolució de la costa i l’estudi d’impactes antropogènics de diferents tipus, entre altres, i en el camp dels riscos geomarins, especialment en relació amb la gènesi i l’impacte de tsunamis.

El GRC Geociències Marines ha teixit una àmplia i profitosa xarxa de col·laboracions amb investigadors i organitzacions de tot el món. A més, el Grup participa des de fa molt temps en programes científics internacionals de gran abast, com ara CLIVAR, IMAGES, IMBER, IODP, IPY, JGOFS, PAGES i SOLAS, entre altres.
