Oriol Ferrer Garcia

Tenured-trak lecturer at the Department of Geodynamics & Geophysics, University of Barcelona

Oriol Ferrer graduated from Universitat de Barcelona in 2002 with a B.Sc. degree in Geology. Subsequently, he undertook a Ph.D. in Earth Sciences at the same university. In 2012 he finished his PhD with honors focused on the study of the eastern Bay of Biscay structure and the evolution of salt structures of the Parentis basin (eastern Bay of Biscay). Since 2009 Oriol has been a research assistant on the Geomodels Research Institute, combining this work with teaching as a lecturer in different B.Sc and M.Sc. courses of the Universitat de Barcelona and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. Since 2010 he has been in charge of the Geomodels analogue modeling laboratory working on its design and construction. During 2013-2014 he did a post-doc at the Fault Dynamics Research Group (Royal Holloway University of London). Actually he has a tenured-track lecturer position at the University of Barcelona.

Much of Oriol’s work has focused on the structure of the Bay of Biscay - North-Iberian Margin, the Basque-Cantabrian, Ebro and Duero Basins, Eastern Mediterranean and the Prebetic Zone in Spain but also on the Salta Basin (Argentina) and the North Sea. His current research interest includes analogue modeling (salt tectonics during extension & inversion), salt tectonics, 2D/3D seismic interpretation and 3D reconstruction of geological bodies.

My research lines are focused mainly in:

  1. Structural analogue modelling

  2. Salt Tectonics

  3. Extension & inversion tectonics
