History

Our research group had its beginning with the creation of the Spanish Research Unit for the European Project on Machine Translation EUROTRA. Our Director, Dr. Ramon Cerdà, Professor of General Linguistics at the University of Barcelona, and Dr. Montserrat Meya were asked by the Ministerio de Educación in 1986, just after Spain joined the European Community, of setting up the research unit for developing Spanish modules.

In 1986 the initial core of the group was already constituted, and in August 1987 full involvement of the group in the activitites of the project was completed. Nuria Bel was then nominated Head of the Research Unit. From October 1987 on the group grew gradually and in December that year another group was constituted at the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid (UAM) under the responsibility of Prof. Marcos Marín. From August 1987 until December 1992, 42 researchers were trained by and worked for EUROTRA.
