The goal of this project is to add semantic information, selected for its relevance for LE applications, to the set of harmonised multifunctional lexica built for 12 European languages by the PAROLE consortium. At the moment, these lexica contain morphological and syntactic information only, organised according to a common model and to common linguistic specifications. The addition of a semantic layer will dramatically increase the value of these lexica, which will be available in the public domain to the LE R&D community at large and will allow the construction of a new generation of applications, services, products.
The following types of semantic information, selected on the basis of the current state-of-the-art and the most urgent needs of the LE systmes, will be encoded for about 10,000 semantic units: domain information, semantic typing of word-senses, semantic typing of arguments; sense definitions and/or lexical glosses.
For each of the European languages involved, the semantic units will be linked to the corresponding syntactic units. The project will reuse existing available linguistic resources where possible, and convert their information content into the common model, through use of tools which ensure the formal coherence of the data.
