Talk “The fact-checking in the communication world” with Martí Renau and Alba Tobella (23/10/2019)

Last Wednesday, October 23, within the framework of the subject ‘Theory and History of Communication’, the journalist Martí Renau and the editor Alba Tobella, both “fact-checkers” of the Verificat platform, taught a master class. During the talk, which was entitled “The fact-checking in the communication world”, they explained the importance of not trusting all the news that come through social networks, and reviewed the different procedures used in Verificat to classify a story as true, false or unprovable.

Using as an example different photographs, videos and voice notes that have been disseminated during the demonstrations and recent riots in the catalan capitals, Renau and Tobella gave the students some tools that they can use to identify which information can be trusted: the inverted search in Google Images (which allows to hang an image and receive its source as a result), or the option to see through Google Maps Street View how a wall or a portal have changed in the past years, a tool that allows to identify, for example, when a graffiti was made on the wall.
