Arguments, Context, and Subjectives

Abstract

This talk is about the lessons of the study of arguments in discourse for a theory of context. I provide three different considerations for thinking that the semantics of arguments requires we model contexts as having a distinctive tree-like structure; I explore the parallels between the resulting conception of context and SDRT's conception of context; and I extend the semantics of arguments in Kocurek and Pavese 2022 to subjective arguments.
