Abstract

f we want to make the world a better place, including the natural environment, what should we do within the domain of food? Should we adopt vegetarian diets and promote organic and local agriculture? I argue that the answers to these questions are more complicated than they initially appear. Among other things, I explain why an 'altruistic omnivore' who eats carefully chosen conventional foods and meats can have a smaller harm footprint than a vegetarian. This raises problems for familiar arguments for vegetarianism.
